Back to homepageThank you Rescuepup for everything you did to get Smiley the medical and resocialization help he deserved after being caged by WAIF for two years. Thank you Kolla, his Rescuepup foster mom, and Anna his trainer. WAIF had no foster program or trainers to help Smiley. It just planned to kill him for stress-based behaviors he developed after two years in a cage. No one was ever allowed to adopt him because he was considered a "pitmix" and the "right family" never came along. (He wasn't a pitmix and over 21 people tried to adopt him, including us. We have a proven history with such dogs, like these two family members.) WAIF, like other so-called "humane" shelters, kills animals based on perceived breed temperament or appearance. Ask your local "shelter" how it treats dogs like Smiley. Animal control shelters that operate this way are the leading cause of death for healthy, adoptable animals in America.
Smiley had no chance at life until a WAIF board member courageously saved him from death. This was the day he was freed from WAIF (and then this board member got pressured by WAIF to quit)

"Personally, I never felt Smiley was a 'dangerous' dog and I disagreed with the decision for euthanasia. I believe there are no 'bad dogs,' only frustrated ones trying to live in the crazy humans' world. When Smiley was 'pup-knapped' I was quite relieved and hoped he was in a home away from Whidbey where he was being well cared for and loved. Then on April 1st I received a phone call saying Smiley was spotted at an off leash park, was picked up by the Sheriff and would I please help him; I was devastated. I raced over to WAIF to try to adopt him and when I saw his happy, smiling face I made the decision that I would do everything in my power to save this dog's life. I put the word out that I needed help and have spent every waking moment over the last 24 days talking to wonderful people and organizations to find a suitable alternative WAIF would agree to. I am so pleased that today, Smiley was transferred to Allicia with RescuePup in Mill Creek. Please visit their website and see what a wonderful organization this is, and truly what a happy ending this will be for Smiley. I also want to thank everyone who has spent hundreds of hours helping me find placement options for Smiley. This would not have been possible without you. My only hope now is that WAIF sees the multitude of experts and options out there willing to partner with WAIF and that Smiley will be the first of many dogs whose lives will be spared and given a 2nd chance for a loving forever home they so truly deserve."
